The
Tipping Point

The draping of the American flag over the face of the statue of
Saddam Hussein in Baghdad's Firdos Square was a deliberate act
that confirms the true intent of the Bush Administration. This
embarassing exhibition of pseudo "Iwo Jima-ism" was
an insult to the so-called liberation of Iraq and a blatant demonstration
of hubris. It was inappropriate and almost seemed choreographed
to subliminally reflect the Bush doctrine of might makes right.
The flag is hung upside down. This is the standard 'distress signal'.
I don't believe for a minute that Cpl. Chin, the U.S. Marine who
hung the flag, made a mistake. A U.S. serviceman knows all the
ins and outs on how to display and fold a flag. Why did he hang
the flag upside down? Did he have special orders to do it that
way?
The
real message of American conquest and occupation was viewed all
around the world today. It was 'in your face' democracy and imperialism
at its ugliest. Speaking of liberation, one has to wonder where
all the Iraqi women were at this momentous and historical occasion.
I did not see a single Iraqi woman in any of the CNN and FOX footage.
Groups of Iraqi men and boys paraded jubilantly on foot and in
old cars, honking and celebrating throughout downtown Baghdad.
One group dragged the decapitated statue's head through the streets,
while others ripped apart portraits of Saddam to pieces, some
mocked and struck his effigy with their shoe. In Iraq, striking
someone with the sole of your shoe is considered the ultimate
personal insult and disgrace.
The
fall of Baghdad was inevitable. It came sooner than expected.
How Bagdad fell without the much feared and anticipated fight
is a mystery. Perhaps some secret deal was made which allowed
Saddam to leave the country in exchange for little or no resistance.
Liberation for the poor denizens of Baghdad was looting stores
for refrigerators, furniture and basic necessities. For the coalition,
the oil fields are the prize. The people of Iraq will have a counterfeit
democracy in exchange for their oil. Our so called "American
way" with McDonald's, Kmart, and Taco Bell will spread to
this land that once was the cradle of civilization. It will corrupt
and destroy the heart and soul one of the most important cultural
regions of humanity. Living under a dictatorship is not something
I am defending. Saddam was an evil and cruel tyrant and Iraq is
better off without him. If we are to be consistant in our foreign
policy then there are a few other countries in that region that
need a regime change and also possess weapons of mass destruction.
Let's liberate Israel next.
U.S.
Marines raised the stars and stripes on Iraqi soil before, on
March 21. You will recall the incident at the Aluboor marine terminal.
A U.S. Marine replaced the Iraqi flag at the entrance to Iraq's
main port of Umm Qasr with the stars and stripes and the flag
of the Marine Corps. Some time later, the flag was removed. No
reason was given for the decision, but Washington has consistently
stressed that "invading"
(sic) U.S. forces want to liberate Iraq, not occupy it. Note that
the word "invading" was used by Washington. And "consistantly
stressed!" Why would the Bush Administration need to repeatedly
stress that point? Only because they cannot help expose their
ostentatiousness and bad intent. But the taste of "liberation"
to the average Iraqi will be bittersweet. The reality of U.S.
domination and the installation of a puppet regime will only stoke
the fires of terrorists in the region.
In
2002 it was Afghanistan, 2003 Iraq, 2004 Syria?, 2005 Iran? Forget
about the U.S. invading North Korea, they have WMD. The Bush Administration
knows it is too late to disarm them by force. Kim Jong-il will
use them if he is provoked or bullied like Iraq. They have studied
and understand Washington's game. Bush will evade, not invade
North Korea. The tipping point has long since passed.
